  • Why do autoflowering plants stay small? How to get the most out of your harvest.

Since April 2024, growing your own cannabis, up to three plants per person, has finally been legal. Many hobby gardeners opt for so-called autoflowering cannabis plants . These have the major advantage of being harvested faster and requiring less maintenance. However, there's a problem that surprises many beginners: autoflowering plants often remain smaller than expected. In this article, we explain why this is the case and how you can get the most out of your harvest.

Why do autoflowering flowers stay small?

Autoflowering plants have a special characteristic that distinguishes them from photoperiod cannabis plants: they automatically switch to the flowering stage, regardless of the amount of light they receive. This makes them particularly attractive for beginners. However, this very characteristic can also cause them to remain smaller than expected.

Root growth is a crucial factor. As soon as the roots of an autoflowering plant encounter resistance, for example from a pot that is too small or compacted soil, the plant interprets this as a signal to concentrate on flowering. The result: The plant stops growing and remains smaller. Since the flowering phase of autoflowering plants usually begins after just a few weeks, it is important to provide them with sufficient space from the start.

    The solution: Think big!

To prevent your autoflowering plants from remaining small, there's a simple solution: plant them directly in a large pot. The larger the pot, the less likely the roots are to encounter resistance early on. This gives your plant the best conditions to develop fully and reach a respectable size.

A pot with a volume of at least 15 to 20 liters is recommended. Even better is to grow the plants directly outdoors, where the roots can grow unhindered. It is also important to ensure loose, well-aerated soil that gives the roots room to spread.
